What is the difference between a mechanical and an ultrasonic water meter?
Different measurement principles:
Mechanical water meters measure water usage by converting the mechanical rotation of an impeller driven by water flow into volume readings. Ultrasonic water meters, on the other hand, have no mechanical parts and calculate flow velocity and rate based on the time difference between ultrasonic waves traveling with and against the flow.
Core components and wear conditions:
Mechanical water meters contain easily worn parts such as impellers and gears, which are prone to wear and scaling over long-term use. Ultrasonic water meters contain only ultrasonic probes and electronic components, with no moving parts, resulting in virtually no wear.
Accuracy performance:
Mechanical water meters have large measurement errors at low flow rates, and their accuracy gradually declines with wear. Ultrasonic water meters maintain high precision across both high and low flow rates, with stable accuracy throughout their entire service life and no degradation.
Functional attributes:
Mechanical water meters provide only basic metering functions and require manual reading. Ultrasonic water meters support remote reading, data uploading, leakage alarms, and other smart functions, making them suitable for intelligent water management systems.

How do ultrasonic water meters work?
Dual-probe collaborative operation: Two opposing ultrasonic probes are installed inside the water meter, each transmitting ultrasonic waves in the downstream and upstream directions.
Time difference generation: The water flow increases the propagation speed of the ultrasonic wave in the downstream direction and decreases it in the upstream direction, creating a fixed time difference.
Flow rate and water consumption conversion: Based on the time difference, the water flow velocity is calculated. Combined with the cross-sectional area of the water meter pipe, the flow rate per unit time is determined, and the total water consumption is obtained through accumulation.
